Lindsay Tanner speaks

And I spit *hak-ptoie*

I'm going to go out on a limb here, and declare myself all for genetic alteration, improvement and the such.

I want to be one of those "merging of carbon and silicon systems" ([info]z3nmaster speaks of this a few entries ago, but not quite sure where he wanted to go with it... drop me a comment... let us debate!).

I want to be able to give my children increased intelligence.

I want to go into a shop and come out with gills should I desire.

Bring it on! Let the genetics fly freeeeeee!

A more intelligible responce soon.

That article angers me.
It angers me more than anything else I've read in the last few months.

I tend to spell it *hoichk-ptooheey*

But your way works, too.

...he mentioned the Nazis.

And anyway, Herald-Sun readers can't handle any science more complex than boiling an egg. (:

The Nazi reference was in context.

While the process of boiling an egg is simple the science behind why it works isn't.

Well, yes, the reference was in context, but he was very much using it rhetorically to encourage an emotional response in his readers. It's much harder to disagree with him now on any of his points, because then you're just like the Nazis...

The word "Eugenics" has been poisoned forever by that whole Nazi thing. Makes developing and evolving the idea next to impossible.

You're going to have to get over this one. :) That word's meaning has shifted, it happens.

Maybe you could use:
Genetic Enhancement
Transhuman Therapy
Gengineering

Can't, because inevitably somebody comes and says: "But thats eugenics in a funny hat! That is for Nazis!"

You know, that would be a pretty good argumemt [info]hege_mon, if you didn't immediately try to exterminate anyone who said that to you. :)

Screw genetics. I don't intend to surf the edge of the singularity just so my hypothetical kids can be machine-gods. I want it for myself.

The thing that really irritates me about this article is that he starts with an emotive example of a future of homogeneous, mindless drones. (Like his readers :) ). But when he tries to find actual examples of the scary new world it's all diverse and bizarre people who want to change themselves for the better.

Once trans humanism takes off (hopefully literally) I think everyone being the same will be the last of our worries.

Hell, I know I have a few choice modifications in mind for my chassis (all biological, none cybernetic). A couple of extra arms I'm sure couldn't hurt, possibly some useless wings (because they're cool goddammit. Though it will mean public transport is going to be tricky...).

I get a feeling that most people have those way further down on the list.

Yep, I'm waiting for the introduction of Humanity 2.0, and I'll be first in line for the upgrade...

I know what you mean on the wing scale...

Sure Jet Engines; Plasma Beams; E.M. Cannons; and Lobotomizer Probes may be more immediately practical in raining terror on my meat-victims, but nothing can surpass the pure aesthetic appeal of Retractable Blades and Wings of Fire.

If we have designer babies, then rich people will be able to make their kids better! BETTER! We can't have that! It'd be like rich people being able to feed their kids better, or pay for tutors or having the time and energy to pay them more attention! And we don't let that happen now! No! It'd be unfair! Can you imagine?! Society would collapse if some people were better of than others!
